Konak is the historic and administrative heart of İzmir. The city's emblem, the Clock Tower, stands on waterfront Konak Square next to the small, tiled Yalı Mosque. Right behind it spreads the Kemeraltı Bazaar, a centuries-old trading quarter of hans, narrow lanes and small shops. The ancient Agora of Smyrna, the hilltop Kadifekale fortress and the historic Asansör lift in Karataş are also in the area, and the ferry pier links Konak to the other side of the bay.
Many streets in and around Kemeraltı are narrow or pedestrian-only, so vehicles cannot always reach the door of every hotel or guesthouse. In that case your driver will drop you at the closest accessible point. Adding the name and street of your accommodation to the booking helps pinpoint the right spot.
